Lease or buy equipment?
Compare paying cash, taking a loan or chattel mortgage, and leasing a machine or vehicle: what each costs today, each month and in total.
What these numbers mean
- The big result names the option with the lowest total paid on your numbers.
- Cash out today is what you pay at the start: the full price, your deposit, or nothing.
- Paid at the end is a balloon on the loan or a residual on the lease.
- Total paid adds up every payment. Tax effects are not included, so ask your accountant.
Good to know
- Tax treatment differs between paying cash, a loan and a lease, and is not included here. Ask your accountant how each would work for your business.
- Totals are simple sums of payments, with no fees and no allowance for what your cash could earn elsewhere.
- The lease assumes nothing is paid upfront. If your quote asks for payments in advance or fees, add them yourself.
- With no residual, the lease total does not include owning the equipment at the end.
- This is a guide only, not a quote, an offer of finance, a borrowing limit or financial, legal or tax advice.
